SAR Eagle Scout Contest

Recognizing outstanding Eagle Scouts with scholarships and honors

The National Society, Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) invites all Eagle Scouts to participate in the annual Arthur M. & Berdena King Eagle Scout Contest. State and national winners receive scholarships and recognition for leadership, scholarship, and interest in the American Revolution. 
Who can apply
  • Eagle Scouts currently registered in an active unit who do not reach their 19th birthday during the calendar year of application.
  • Contest year runs January 1–December 31.
  • Eligible Scouts may apply in more than one year (while meeting age requirements). 
What you submit
  1. Two-page application form (signed)
  2. Four-generation ancestry chart
  3. Original 500-word patriotic-themed essay (with sources)

How judging worksEntries are judged at Chapter → State → National levels. State winners advance to national judging conducted by the SAR Eagle Scout Committee. 
Awards (National)Top national scholarships currently include $10,000 (1st), $6,000 (2nd), $4,000 (3rd), with additional awards to 15 places. State and chapter awards may also be offered. 
Key dates (Illinois)
  • Illinois chapter submission window: Set by your local chapter (varies).
  • Illinois State deadline: Set by Illinois SAR (commonly in December/January to allow judging).
  • National submission (by state society): February 15.
    Check with your local chapter or Illinois SAR Youth Programs for the exact state deadline this year. 
How to apply in Illinois
  1. Find your local SAR chapter (based on your residence).
  2. Assemble your packet (application, 4-gen chart, 500-word essay).
  3. Submit to your chapter by its posted deadline. Chapter winners advance to the Illinois SAR competition; the Illinois winner advances to National.
